My Musical Evolution – Part 374 21st Century Those Crazy In-Laws

Marilyn Manson Smells Like ChildrenMy wife has 7 brothers, a twin sister and an Irish father. The boys are separated by over 15 years from the oldest to the youngest.  The oldest is just a few years younger than me. The youngest was a baby when I married his sister. What I’m getting to is that there were so many kids at so many ages that so many musical styles and influences were in play at any given time. Combine that with a father-in-law with a penchant for bagpipes and Spartacus and you have a unique aspect to My Musical Evolution.

I chose Marilyn Manson to represent this page because it was the most unlikely artist for me to like. Shawn pointed me toward Marilyn Mansion, Alice In Chains and some of the other grunge leftovers. I never would have given Marilyn Manson a chance for purely prejudicial reasons but on a family vacation to Vermont, I got a chance to sample some and found that it was interesting to say the least.

I remember some VH1 countdown show about musical acts. When they got to Marilyn Manson, the cut to an interview of Alice Cooper who said “Take a woman’s name. Lot’s of make up and theatrics. Why didn’t I think of that!?” I thought that was brilliant.

Alice In Chains turned out to be the real score from that vacation. Main In The Box  rocks. I thought it would funny if Dick Cheney named his daughter Allison. Then she’d be Allison Cheney.

From my ever so Irish Father-In Law I got the gift of Celtic music. I like the bagpipes on special occasions or in small doses but the softer more New Age-y Celtic music of harp, flutes and violins is very nice. Then there are those Irish drinking songs. Remember The Wolfetones from way back at the beginning?  In summary, I appreciate the gentle nudges my In-Laws have exerted on My Musical Evolution.
